Like many Australians, we were shocked by the contents of the recent State of the Environment report. While it acknowledges that the pressures of climate change, habitat loss, pollution and mining have had a devastating toll on the Australian environment, much more must be done.
Australia’s new Environment Minister, Tanya Plibersek, has committed to reforming Australia’s broken environmental protection legislation. Acknowledging that habitat is rapidly disappearing and that the climate crisis is consigning too many species to extinction, the Minister made it clear that halting the damage isn’t good enough. We must act now to mend the harm we have already caused:
Australia has pushed more mammals to extinction than any other continent on Earth;
The number of threatened Australian species has grown by 8% since 2016;
Climate change could cause the extinction of over a million species in the next 50 years;
In just a few hundred years - the blink of an eye in the planet’s history - humans have increased the extinction rate by as much as 1000 times more than before our species first stepped foot on Earth;
Some species are driven extinct before we even know they exist.
Though overhauling our environmental protection laws may be challenging, not doing so risks far more. Swift action that protects the environment offers the 47th Parliament the opportunity to build a legacy. It’s time.
We need to show the government that we support strong action to protect Australia's imperilled wildlife and their vulnerable habitat. Please join us in calling on your government to have the courage that others in your position have not.
